PSA - Barrier qualification ReelWell Drilling Method
SINTEF Petroleum Research has been commissioned by the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to provide an assessment of well barrier philosophy during drilling and completion using Reel Well Drilling Method, RDM. This is done to ensure that RDM are a robust and equally safe solution in relation to conventional drilling and "conventional" MPD drilling.
RDM is designed to drill the reservoir section in the "Managed Pressure Drilling", MPD mode. In order to conduct this with the RDM technology, there are introduced some new components into the drilling system. The RDM technology is mainly considered to be applicable for drilling depleted reservoirs where the pressure window one can operate is limited.
One advantage of drilling with RDM in MPD mode is that the requirement for two independent barriers are met but only when heavy drilling fluid used in the well annulus. Otherwise it will not satisfy these requirements, similar to conventional MPD.
