HSE - Offshore Division (OSD)
The OSD part of the HSE web site contains much useful information on who we are and how we work, ongoing Key Programmes, Safety alerts/notices, topic information, published research reports and our Science and Technology Strategy.
About the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
Britain's Health and Safety Commission (HSC) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are responsible for the regulation of almost all the risks to health and safety arising from work activity in Britain.
Our mission is to protect people's health and safety by ensuring risks in the changing workplace are properly controlled.
We look after health and safety in nuclear installations and mines, factories, farms, hospitals and schools, offshore gas and oil installations, the safety of the gas grid and the movement of dangerous goods and substances, railway safety, and many other aspects of the protection both of workers and the public. Local authorities are responsible to HSC for enforcement in offices, shops and other parts of the services sector.
Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR)
General introduction to BERR
BERR brings together functions from the former Department of Trade and Industry, including responsibilities for productivity, business relations, energy, competition and consumers, with the Better Regulation Executive (BRE), previously part of the Cabinet Office.
The new Department leads work to create the conditions for business success through competitive and flexible markets that create value for businesses, consumers and employees. The Department drives regulatory reform, and works across Government and with the regions to raise levels of UK productivity. More information is available from: http://www.berr.gov.uk/
BERR Objectives (Energy) – Offshore oil / gas sector
BERR’s objective is to maximise the economic benefit to the UK of its oil / gas resources, taking into account the environmental impact of offshore exploration / development activities, and the need to ensure secure, sustainable and affordable energy supplies.
Offshore Environmental Legislation - Details on current legislation can be accessed from: http://www.og.berr.gov.uk/environment/index.htm#envlegis
Offshore Environmental Research - Information on complete / extant projects supported under an Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Research Programme is available at: http://www.og.berr.gov.uk/environment/rdc.htm. Please note that this programme is now closed. However, BERR will be considering the practicality of linking its future environmental R&D activities with an industry-led initiative, which is expected to result from an evidence review commissioned by Oil and Gas UK (formerly UKOOA) in June 2007. For more information on the `evidence review’ please contact Mick Borwell at Oil and Gas UK - mborwell@oilandgasuk.co.uk.
